Protection of the Environment

Sri Lanka's environmental challenges are governance challenges. Deforestation, pollution, coastal erosion, and climate vulnerability all reflect policy decisions — or the absence of them. The Office of the Leader of the Opposition is committed to making environmental protection a consistent and serious part of parliamentary debate. Wherever the opportunity arises in the chamber, our office advocates for stronger environmental policy and raises awareness of governance failures that threaten our natural environment. Within our own administration, we are implementing environmentally responsible practices and planning landmark activities that demonstrate this commitment. This project reflects the office's role as a proactive oversight body — one that does not wait for environmental crises to respond, but raises the alarm early and proposes constructive solutions before damage becomes irreversible.
